Roger K. Newport | Chairman, SMDI CEO Group | Chief Executive Officer | AK Steel Corporation

Roger Newport was named Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of AK Steel Corporation (NYSE:  AKS) on January 1, 2016.  Based in West Chester, Ohio, (Greater Cincinnati), AK Steel is a world leader in the production of flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, primarily for automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. Mr. Newport started his career with the company in 1985 in the accounting department. He advanced through a number of increasingly responsible finance, sales and marketing roles at the corporate headquarters and the company’s Middletown Works. He was named Controller in 2001, and Chief Accounting Officer in 2004. He advanced to Vice President, Business Planning and Development in 2010, and Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer in 2012. He was named Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer in 2014, and Executive Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer in 2015. Mr. Newport serves on the Board of Directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of the World Steel Association.  He is also Chairman of the Steel Market Development Institute CEO Group.  Mr. Newport is a member of the Washington, D.C.-based Business Roundtable.  He is also a member of Financial Executives International. Mr. Newport serves on the Board of Directors of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber and the Dean’s Executive Advisory Board for Xavier University’s Williams College of Business.  He served as Group Chair, Special Projects, for the 2014 United Way of Greater Cincinnati Campaign, and is an alumnus of the Leadership Cincinnati USA program.  Mr. Newport has coached youth soccer and baseball teams, volunteered for TOP soccer for children with disabilities, and served on the Board of Directors of the Mason High School Soccer Boosters. Mr. Newport holds a BBA degree in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA with honors from Xavier University.

John J. Ferriola | Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President | Nucor Corporation

John Ferriola began serving as Chief Executive Officer in January 2013 and is also Chairman of the Board of Directors. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operation Officer from 2011 to 2013. 

Prior to this, Mr. Ferriola served as Chief Operating Officer of Steel Making Operations from 2007 to 2011. He served as an Executive Vice President of Nucor from 2002 to 2007, as a Vice President from 1996 to 2001, and as General Manager of Nucor Steel, Maintenance and Engineering at Nucor Steel in Jewett, TX. With a degree in electrical engineering, Mr. Ferriola also worked in various operating and management roles in the steel industry before joining Nucor.

Sean Donnelly | President and Chief Executive Officer | ArcelorMittal Dofasco

Sean Donnelly was appointed to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Dofasco and a member of the ArcelorMittal Management Committee in 2014. He has held various leadership positions including Vice President, Manufacturing; Vice President, Technology; Director, Quality Systems & Manufacturing Technology; General Manager, Market Development and Product Applications; New Product Development Process Owner; Galvanize Technology Business Unit Manager; and Operations Foreman.

Mr. Donnelly joined Dofasco in 1981 as a Production Engineer in Galvanize after graduating from Hamilton's McMaster University with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering.

Thomas J. Gibson | President and Chief Executive Officer | American Iron and Steel Institute

Before joining AISI in September 2008, Thomas Gibson served as Senior Vice President of Advocacy for the American Chemistry Council (ACC). He previously served as Senior Vice President, Government Affairs for the Portland Cement Association (PCA). Prior to joining PCA in 2004, Mr. Gibson served as Chief of Staff for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Previously, Mr. Gibson was the Associate Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation. Additionally, he worked as Majority Deputy Staff Director and Majority Counsel from 1995-2001 for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. From 1993-1995, Mr. Gibson served private-sector clients in regulatory and legislative affairs with Don Clay Associates, Inc. He was with the EPA previously for two years as a Congressional Liaison Specialist, and with the Raytheon Company for five years after service in the U.S. Navy from 1979-1985.

Mr. Gibson received his law degree from Georgetown University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He holds a Master of Marine Affairs degree from the University of Rhode Island and a B.S. degree in Naval Architecture from the United States Naval Academy.

Charles “Chuck” Schmitt | President | SSAB Americas

Charles "Chuck" Schmitt is President of SSAB Americas, which is the North and South American business area of Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB. SSAB Americas operates two steel mills located in Mobile, AL and Montpelier, IA, together with three cut-to-length facilities in Toronto, Canada; St. Paul, MN; and Houston, TX. Mr. Schmitt began his career in the steel industry with United States Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was selected to participate in the company’s management trainee program in 1985. Mr. Schmitt held several positions there with increasing responsibility, including Resident Sales Manager for the Tubular Products division; and Midwest Sales Manager for IPSCO Tubular, where we was responsible for the successful start-up of IPSCO’s pipe mill in Camanche, IA, the company’s first Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) and line pipe operation in the United States. He also moved to Houston and managed the development and implementation of the company's U.S. commercial plan.

Mr. Schmitt accepted a two-year assignment with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) as part of a special fellowship program. He served as chairman of AISI’s Steel Utility Pole Task Group and directed the newly formed program to achieve a significant share of the utility pole and tower market. During this time, Mr. Schmitt also served as IPSCO’s governmental affairs representative. After his fellowship, he rejoined IPSCO and returned to Houston, where he managed the construction and commissioning of IPSCO’s coil, temper-processing operations for flat-rolled products. Later, he relocated to Mobile, AL to serve as General Manager for IPSCO, Southern Business Area. After the 2007 acquisition of IPSCO by SSAB in Stockholm, Sweden, Mr. Schmitt was promoted to Vice President, Southern Business Unit for the Americas’ Business Area. His responsibilities included oversight of operations and commercial activities at SSAB’s Mobile steelworks; Houston’s coil processing operations; and Latin America. In July 2011, Mr. Schmitt was promoted to SSAB’s Group Executive Committee and appointed President of Business Area Americas. In this role, he is responsible for directing all commercial and operational activities, as well as the overall financial performance for the Americas Business Area. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Metals Service Center Institute and is Chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute. A fourth-generation steelmaker, Mr. Schmitt received his B.B.A. degree from the University of Texas in Arlington, TX.
