John Surma | Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, United States Steel Corporation

John Surma

John Surma is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Steel Corporation. He joined Price Waterhouse LLP in 1976, and in 1981 he served in the Manchester (England) office of the Price Waterhouse United Kingdom firm. In 1987, he was admitted to the partnership. In 1983, he participated in the President’s Executive Exchange Program in Washington, D.C., where he served as executive staff assistant to the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. In 1997, Mr. Surma joined Marathon Oil Company as senior vice president, finance & accounting. He was appointed president, Speedway SuperAmerica LLC in 1998. He became senior vice president, supply & transportation for Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP) in 2000 was named president the following year. Effective with the separation from USX Corporation, he became vice chairman and chief financial officer of United States Steel Corporation in January 2002. He was named president in March 2003, and president and chief operating officer in June 2003. He was elected president and chief executive officer in 2004, and chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer in February 2006. Mr. Surma is a member of the board of directors of the Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. He serves as vice chairman of the board of directors of the World Steel Association and held the title of chairman from 2006 through 2007. He is also a member of the board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute where he previously served as chairman and vice chairman. He is a current member of the National Petroleum Council and The Business Council.

Daniel DiMicco

DanielDiMicco is President and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation. He is also Chairman of Nucor’s Board of Directors. Mr. DiMicco has held increasing roles in management since joining Nucor in 1982 as a plant metallurgist and quality control manager. He was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation in 2000, elected Vice Chairman in 2001 and Chairman in 2006. Prior to Nucor, Mr. DiMicco worked for Republic Steel Corporation after completing his Masters in Science Degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania and his Bachelors of Science in Engineering, Metallurgy and Material Science from Brown University.In July 2008, he was appointed to the United States Manufacturing Council by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez.The Manufacturing Council, established to ensure regular communication between the federal government and manufacturing sector, works directly with the Commerce Department to advocate, coordinate and implement policies to strengthen U.S. manufacturers' competitiveness worldwide.

Guilherme Gerdau Johannpeter

Guilherme Gerdau Johannpeter serves as the president of Gerdau Long Steel North America. In this role, he leads the North American operations of Gerdau and reports to the company's chief executive officer. Mr. Johannpeter has more than 25 years experience with the company and has held several leadership positions. In 2006, he relocated to the U.S. as marketing director for Gerdau Long Steel North America and was promoted to vice president for the Manitoba steel mill, Bright Bar and Duluth Grinding Ball facilities in 2007. Later that year, he joined the Gerdau Long Steel North America Executive Committee. In 2008, Johannpeter was promoted to vice president of SBQ and wire rod operations for Gerdau Long Steel North America. Most recently, he served as vice president of Gerdau Special Steel North America. Johannpeter holds a law degree from Unisinos University in Brazil and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management in Evanston, Ill.

Christoph V. Lackinger | President and CEO, ThyssenKrupp Steel USA

 

Chris Lackinger was appointed President and CEO of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA in October of 2009 after serving as Vice President of Technology for the company since March 2007. He is responsible for the project development and operations for the carbon steel segment of ThyssenKrupp’s new $4.6 billion steel and stainless steel processing facilities in Calvert, Alabama. He first joined Thyssen Steel in 1989 and served the company in many different areas within the steel and stainless steel segments. In 2003, he was appointed Head of the Technology Department for ThyssenKrupp Steel.Christoph graduated from RWTH Aachen, Germany with a Masters in mechanical engineering. He is a Member of the Board of Managers for ThyssenKrupp Business Area Steel Americas; Chairman of the Alabama Iron and Steel Council; Member of the Board of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI); and serves on the Boards of Directors for the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center and the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Hedi have two sons and reside in Mobile, Alabama.

Mike Rehwinkel

Mike Rehwinkel is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Evraz North America, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Since joining Evraz in February 2010, Mike has assembled and led a dynamic executive team focused on value creation and a commercially‐driven transformation that includes the vertical integration of the company’s tubular, flat‐rolled and long businesses. With over 30 years of industrial manufacturing experience, Mike brings a wealth of commercial expertise to his position at Evraz. Mike has held senior management positions in operations,
finance, and sales and, most recently in his career, executive positions at Georgia‐Pacific LLC, including senior vice president of the company’s packaging business and president of GP Wood Products. Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from William Carey University, Mississippi, where he also pursued his love of competitive athletics on the basketball team. Mike also completed the advanced management program at Duke University, North Carolina.

Michael Rippey was elected as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mittal Steel USA in August 2006. Previously, he had been the company's executive vice president, sales & marketing, since April 2005, with direct responsibility for all sales and marketing of light flat-rolled and plate products. From January 2004, Mike Rippey, was executive vice president, commercial, and chief financial officer, at Ispat Inland Inc., a predecessor company. He joined the company in June 1998. He has a bachelor's degree in marketing from Indiana University, Bloomington, a master's degree in banking and finance from Loyola University, Chicago, and a master of business administration degree from the University of Chicago.

Juergen Schachler

Juergen Schachler was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Inc. in May, 2007. He began his career with one of Germany’s leading banks, and has held senior positions in the chemicals and steel processing industries. In 1993, he joined Sprint Metal Edelstahlziehereien, a member company of a predecessor of ArcelorMittal, and has since held leadership roles in other stainless steel business units, including Techalloy Company Inc., Trefilados Inoxidables de Mexico and Thainox Steel Limited in Thailand. Prior to his appointment at Dofasco, Mr. Schachler was Chief Executive Officer of Arcelor Eisenhüttenstadt in Germany, a fully integrated steel mill. He is Chair and on the boards of the Canadian Steel Producers’ Association and the American Iron and Steel Institute. He is also a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. Mr. Schachler is a graduate of the Universität Hannover in Germany, where he specialized in Management, Economics and Finance.

Robert R. Smith | President, USS-POSCO Industries

Robert R. Smith

Robert Smith was appointed President of USS-POSCO Industries in January, 1998. He started at USS-POSCO Industries as Vice President - Administration and Finance in 1990 and later moved to Vice President – Commercial. Mr. Smith began his career with U.S. Steel Corporation at Gary Works in Gary, Indiana finishing his tour there as Staff Supervisor of Analysis and Statistics. He was U.S. Steel’s first participant in the President’s Executive Exchange program in Washington, DC, serving as Assistant to the Director of the Federal Energy Commission during the one-year assignment. He returned to U.S. Steel as Manager - Operations Planning for the company’s domestic steel operations and then moved to U. S. Steel’s Fairfield Works plant to serve as Manager – Accounting. Mr. Smith is a member of the American Management Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Senior Executives Network, the President's Executive Exchange Alumni Association and the Commonwealth Club of California. A native of New Kensington, PA, Mr. Smith is a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He and his wife Linda reside in Walnut Creek, CA.

Jim Wainscott joined AK Steel as vice president and treasurer in 1995, and became chief financial officer in 1998. In 2003, Mr. Wainscott was named president, CEO and a member of the board of directors of AK Steel and, in 2006, he was named chairman of the board of directors. Mr. Wainscott is the immediate past chairman of AISI, and is currently serving the organization as vice chairman. He has also served in the past as chairman of AISI’s Policy and Planning Committee as well as its Finance Committee. Mr. Wainscott has received the Gary Memorial Medal, AISI’s highest honor, for his lifelong contributions to the North American steel industry. He has also been awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane letters degree from Southern Vermont College, as well as Distinguished Alumni awards from the University of Notre Dame and Ball State University. He is also a member of the board of directors of Parker Hannifin Corporation, and is a member of the Washington, DC-based Business Roundtable and the Ohio Export Advisory Group of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. He is vice chair of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, a member of the executive advisory board of Ball State University’s Miller College of Business, and a member of the campaign board of Ohio Cancer Research Associates.
