Codes and Standards

AISI’s Standards Development program began with the sponsorship of research at Cornell University in the 1930s and the publication of the first AISI Specification in 1946. This work was initiated because of difficulties faced in the acceptance of cold-formed steel construction due to the lack of applicable provisions in U.S. building codes. Since those early beginnings, AISI has engaged a committed group of professionals to expand the body of knowledge and enhance the Specification. The latest edition is the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, which is known throughout the world and is adopted in the U.S. as AISI S100 and in Canada as CSA S136.

AISI’s Standards Council is responsible for:

  • Maintaining the ANSI accreditation and ensuring compliance with operating procedures.
  • Maintaining an efficient and effective committee leadership structure.
  • Initiating and managing standards development projects.

North American Specification. The North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members is the foundation for the design of metal roofing and cladding, steel decking, metal building components, rack storage structures, automotive components, and cold-formed steel framing. It provides engineers, architects, owners, contractors, building officials and manufacturers with design provisions to determine the structural adequacy of cold-formed steel members and products.

The North American Specification is directly referenced in all U.S. model building codes. It is approved as the national standard by ANSI, approved in Canada by Canadian Standards Association, and endorsed in Mexico by CANACERO. Variations are also used in Australia and New Zealand.

The North American Specification has allowed a broader array of software to be available to Canadian designers. The “unified” (i.e., ASD/LRFD, non-dimensional) format has become a model for other such documents, including the widely used AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings.

Supplement No. 2 to AISI S100 (CSA S136), the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, 2007 Edition (S100-07/S2-10), is now available. It includes all updates provided in Supplement No. 1 to the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, 2007 Edition.

The timely completion of this document will make it available for adoption by the 2012 editions of the International Building Code. Click here for more information or to order.

Standards and Committees

The AISI Committee on Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards are the consensus committees that follow the ANSI-Approved Standards for Cold-Formed Steel Design and Construction.
